China-ASEAN Forum on Innovative Cooperation of Sustainable Development Opens in Guilin

China-ASEAN Forum on Innovative Cooperation ofSustainable Development and China (Guilin) International Health Tourism Forum2018 opened in Guilin, Guangxi. The forum, jointly sponsored by theAdministrative Center for China’s Agenda 21 (ACCA21), China-ASEAN TechnologyTransfer Center, Department of Science and Technology of Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region, Health Commission of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, andGuilin Municipal People’s Government, was organized by the Institute of KarstGeology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.

Theforum was attended by about 400 scholars and experts and businessrepresentatives from home and abroad, including UNDP China, ADB, 24 countriesincluding Cambodia, Thailand, USA, Denmark and South Korea, who addressed thetopics of sustainable use of landscape resources, integration of health tourismand economic development.

In hisspeech, Mr. Yang Wan, Assistant Country Director and Head ofSustainable Development at UNDP China, noted that the UN 2030 Agenda forSustainable Development requests all the social sectors to be extensivelyengaged in the agenda for sustainable development, while integrating variousgoals, such as poverty reduction, environmental protection, health andeducation into systematic development. In April 2018, UNDP signed a strategiccooperation agreement with Guilin, according to which UNDP will support Guilinin building a national innovative demonstration zone  for sustainable development agenda. Both sideswill enhance cooperation and summarize the best practices in Guilin fordissemination to other developing countries.  

Dr. Chadamas Thuvasethakul,Executive Vice President of the National Science and Technology DevelopmentAgency of Thailand, said, China and Thailand have been working closely over thepast years. In particular, the Thailand-China Technology Transfer Center hasfurther enhanced the collaboration between the two countries, which can helpThailand strengthen food safety, promote sustainable agriculture, and reach asustainable development goal of “Zero hunger”.

During the forum, Guilin Municipal People’sGovernment and China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Center signed a FrameworkAgreement on Jointly Promoting the Building of National InnovativeDemonstration Zone for Sustainable Development Agenda. Seven projects were alsosigned during the forum, with a total contracted value of RMB 59.3 billion,covering the areas of ecological restoration, health tourism, culture, health andwellness.

At the parallel session on Sustainable Use ofLandscape Resources, experts from China, Serbia, Austria, the USA and Denmark,etc. shared the progress of International Big Scientific Plan on Resources andEnvironmental Effects of Global Karst, and their research findings on karstunderground water, karst cave, karst landform characteristics, cause offormation, and resources potential, as well as urban green and blueinfrastructure development, which provide valuable references for the building ofthe innovative demonstration zone.

On February 13, 2018, the State Councilapproved Guilin Municipal Government to build a national innovativedemonstration zone for sustainable development agenda, focusing on sustainableuse of landscape resources. The demonstration zone is required to focus on theproblems of ecological restoration and environmental protection in karst rockydesertified areas, explore systematic solutions, demonstrate how to achievesustainable development in the ecologically fragile areas with multiple ethnicgroups in central and western China, and provide best practices for China toimplement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
