The First Session of the Second Academic Committee of the International Research Center on Karst under the Auspices of UNESCO (IRCK) took place in Guilin, China on November 16, 2016, which was attended by 13 members from the US, Serbia, Slovenia, Austria, Brazil, Poland, South Africa and China.

During the meeting, the committee members reviewed the outcomes of IRCK from 2014 to 2016, as well as its Second Six-Year Development Plan (2016-2021). They were also briefed the International Scientific Plan on the Resources and Environmental Effects of Global Karst Dynamic Systems(“International Scientific Plan”), which was drafted by IRCK.

Through discussion, it was finally agreed that IRCK has fully leveraged its roleas an international platform. It has enhanced its monitoring network to acquire monitoring data from existing monitoring sites. It has worked closely with relevant organizations including UNESCO to achieve big data sharing. On the basis of sharing such data effectively and efficiently, IRCK has prepared maps on karst globally, and studies the relevant mechanism of karst system, including karst carbon cycle. Meanwhile, it has used the funds available top grade its monitoring instruments and equipment. In the future, IRCK needs to conduct scientific research in deep karst, covering the topics of karst aquifer distribution, distribution and characteristics of oil and gas reservoirs indeep karst, as well as the high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction with stalagmite records.

At last, all the members expressed that they would continue to fully support and promote the scientific research of IRCK based on their research areas, implement the International Scientific Plan step by step, and make due contributions to the future growth of IRCK.
