The First Session of the Second Governing Board Meeting of IRCK/NICK successfully held in Guilin

The First Session of the Second Governing Board Meeting (GB) of the International Research Center on Karst under the Auspices of UNESCO (IRCK/NICK) was held in Guilin, China on November 14, 2016. It brought together 15 of 17 GB Members, with more than two thirds of the members present at the meeting.

Members of the Second GB consistof representatives from UNESCO (Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences), IUGC, Chinese Government, as well as scientists from US, Serbia, Canada and China. More specifically, the Chinese members include representatives from the Ministry of Land and Resources, China Geological Survey, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the Department of Land and Resources of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Guilin Municipal Government, Institute of Karst Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. The GB Meeting is chaired by Peng Qiming, General Engineer of the Ministry of Land and Resources.

During the meeting, the GB Members reviewed the outcomes of IRCK/NICK from 2014 to 2016, its Second Six-Year Plan (2016-2021), the Bylaw, as well as its financial, administrative and staff management measures. They were also briefed the International Scientific Plan on the Resources and Environmental Effects of Global Karst Dynamic Systems (“International Scientific Plan”), which was drafted by IRCK/NICK.

Through discussion, the GB members recognized the outcomes of IRCK/NICK from 2014 to 2016, and initially approved the financial, administrative and staff management measures. They also agreed that the International Scientific Plan should be included as a core component of the Second Six-Year Development Plan of IRCK/NICK (2016-2021), noting that the International Scientific Plan should be further improved and focus on the global scientific issues that are urgently needed to be resolved.  

Finally, all the GB Members committed that they would continue to support and jointly promote the work of IRCK/NICK based on their own conditions, hoping IRCK/NICK could achieve greater success in the future.
