Delegation from International Research Center on Karst, UNESCO (IRCK) attended the UNESCO Science Centres Coordination Meeting and addressed a presentation as an excellent representative

    On May 15-18, 2016, the first Science Centres Coordination Meeting of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (hereafter referred to as UNESCO) was held grandly in Beijing. Ms. Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for the Natural Sciences’ Sector of UNESCO, presented the meeting with a brilliant speech. Delegation from IRCK attended the meeting, and addressed a keynote presentation as an excellent representative.

    The meeting attracted nearly 200 delegates, including 49 UNESCO Science Centres and related international organizations from over 30 countries. Mr. Liu Tongliang, Director of IRCK, led the delegation of IRCK to attend the meeting. In the opening ceremony, Ms. Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for the Natural Sciences’ Sector of UNESCO, stressed that Category 2 Centres under the auspices of UNESCO are playing an increasingly important role in promoting the development of UNESCO and assisting UNESCO to achieve goals in different aspects. She suggested that Science Centres should conduct collaborative development and take each Centre’s advantage to promote the fulfillment of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO 2030 Agenda.

    IRCK delegation discussed thoroughly with other participants during the meeting and made recommendations actively on how to fulfill the SDGs, UNESCO 2030 Agenda and UNESCO’s Mid-term Strategy for Science Centres by the following efforts, including taking the advantages of Centres, carrying out cooperation among Science Centres in same regions or with the similarly themes. After two days’ discussion, the Beijing Action Plan was finally formed and passed, which could be considered as an important guidance to each Category 2 Centres, including strengthening the exchange and cooperation among Centres, sharing information and knowledge, enhancing capacity building, optimizing structure in professional fields, and complementing different resources.

    In the morning of May 18, UNESCO general headquarter chose IRCK as an excellent representative, and invited Prof. Cao Jianhua, Executive Deputy Director of IRCK, to address a keynote presentation namely “Operation and Achievements of International Research Center on Karst (IRCK)”, which won high praise from officers in UNESCO and other participants in the meeting by introducing the academic achievements of IRCK on several research fields, which are global climate change, rocky desertification control, investigation and research on karst hydrogeological survey, karst collapse and karst landscape and natural world heritage, and so on.

    In the afternoon of May 18, IRCK delegation was invited to attend the joint conference organized by China National Commission for UNESCO for Category 2 Centres in China. Mr. Du Yue, Secretary-General of China National Commission for UNESCO, hosted the meeting. There are 13 Category 2 Centres participated the meeting. Mr. Du Yue addressed a presentation namely “Category 2 Centres of UNESCO in China—Function, contribution and development”. In the meeting, he also pointed out that Category 2 Centres should enhance themselves through following contributions: to realize indeed international operation by taking each Centre’s advantage, and introducing foreign scientists; to organize the relevant conferences of UNESCO with related human resources being cultivated; and to enhance self-capacity building for upgrading to Category 1 Centres. Meanwhile, Mr. Du Yue emphasized the cooperation among centres for promoting the joint development of Category 2 Centres in China. Finally, Mr. Du Yue also said that there will be some policy supports from central government, which will be beneficial to Category 2 Centres.
