Students learned karst from IRCK on Earth Day 2008
Twenty students from two colleges in Guilin(Guangxi Normal University and Guilin University of Technology) , China visited Karst Geological Museum of China and Karst Dynamics Laboratory(KDL) which are both sub-department of international research center on karst(IRCK). The museum is the biggest karst science museum in China . There are plenty of maps, photos and many kinds of samples about karst knowledge in the museum such as strata and rocks, dissolution rate, landform, caves, hydrogeology, environmental geology, karst dynamic system and so on. Students had many questions. One of them was puzzled to the formation of caves. Some students asked if there were snake in caves. A student who lived in peak cluster area wanted to know why depressions were flooded in rainy season.
These students visited Karst Dynamics Laboratory after visited the karst museum. Karst Dynamics Laboratory was found by professor Yuan in 1997.The laboratory is always putting herself on the research of karst dynamic system, and great progress has been realized in the past ten years. Important results of karst dynamics laboratory in the recent five years were exhibited in the aisle. Students were interested in the relation of Karst Dynamic System and global climate changes.
The students also visited stalagmites room of karst dynamics laboratory. After visiting everyone got a notebook as gift of the World Earth Day.
